Girls' history is American history in new exhibition at Cincinnati Museum Center

CINCINNATI - Cincinnati Museum Center (CMC) is showing why girls’ history is American history. A new featured exhibition opening this Saturday showcases the strength 和 resilience of girls everywhere. 少女时代(很复杂) features nearly 200 artifacts from the Smithsonian to reflect the diversity of girls’ experiences 和 tell the stories of girls who have challenged the status quo, who have been on the front line of social change 和 who have made history. The definition of girlhood has changed 和 continues to change over time. 少女时代(很复杂) looks at several factors that influence girlhood 和 how it is defined across social, 经济和种族群体. The exhibition explores how girls have changed history in five areas: news 和 politics, 教育, 工作, 健康与时尚. 这样做时， 少女时代 tells the stories of young women including Minnijean Brown, who walked alongside eight other Black students to desegregate Little Rock’s Central High School as one of the Little Rock Nine, 娜奥米·瓦德勒, who led the 2018 March for Our Lives rally in Washington, DC. It also introduces skateboarder Cindy Whitehead 和 impact of Title IX on girls’ athletics, 和 Veronica Mendez 和 how coming of age ceremonies like quinceañeras can be an opportunity to challenge societal expectations.

A makeup table from 1820 和 a 1900s gym suit are featured alongside a 1958 dress worn by Brown, as well as Wadler’s yellow knit scarf that features so prominently in photos of her speaking at the March for Our Lives rally in 2018. Among the exhibition’s historic videos are footage of student-led school walkouts 和 a compilation of U.S. government-produced sex 教育 films from 1919 to 1957. The exhibition design is inspired by magazines 和 zines (self-published magazines) that have been written for 和 by girls. It features murals 和 illustrations by artist Krystal Quiles based on historic photos.
